What can we do to help Arlingtonians experiencing homelessness?

"What can we do to help those in our community who are experiencing homelessness is a question Triina Van gets a lot.


Van has been Homeless Services Coordinator at Arlington County's Department of Human Services for about a year and a half. But she has more than two decades of experience working in the field and thinking about this very question.


It's a difficult one to answer, she says, because the issue of homelessness is 'an incredibly complex one.'


ARLnow spoke with Van about how people can help, common misconceptions about those experiencing homelessness, and where people can turn if they need help."

NLIHC Statement on President Biden's Housing Supply Action Plan


"As rents rise, homelessness increases, public housing deteriorates, and millions of families struggle to keep roofs over their heads, robust federal investments and actions are badly needed and long overdue," stated Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition. "I commend President Biden for taking significant and decisive action, but the administration cannot solve the crisis on its own."

Becoming More Askable Workshop


Saturday, May 21st, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.


Join Doorways and Project PEACE for an in-person workshop! The Becoming More Askable workshop is a part of Arlington’s Askable Adult Campaign that prepares any adult who supports middle and high school-aged youth by helping them identify the tools, language and strategies that foster a safe space for youth to feel empowered to discuss issues important to them. Additionally, this workshop discusses feelings, emotions, and values, as well as explores participants’ personal beliefs around sensitive topics. Not to mention, participants will learn about resources to help stay current and informed.
