New fossil fuel expansion is indefensible in the face of our worsening climate emergency. Yet the Biden administration’s Army Corps of Engineers continues to greenlight new fossil fuel pipelines that threaten our rivers and wetlands using a shortcut called “nationwide permitting” (NWP 12).
This nationwide permitting program is an egregious attack on our shared water and lands. By lumping approvals for many individual river and wetland crossings that are part of larger projects into one permit, corporations exploit NWP 12 to avoid review of the cumulative effect of environmental damages that can occur at hundreds of river crossings along a pipeline’s path – including polluted runoff from construction activities and spills of oil that contaminate waterways.
New oil and gas pipeline approvals are often expedited using the general NWP 12 process, which has allowed the government to swiftly approve destructive pipelines such as Keystone XL, the Mountain Valley Pipeline and the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Public comments are an important way for us to demonstrate the strength of our shared opposition to this streamlined permitting of new fossil fuel infrastructure. Since this is a federal permitting process, Biden's administration – and ultimately Biden himself – has the decision-making authority. That means that regardless of where you live, your voice matters!
At Food & Water Watch, stopping fossil fuel infrastructure is a signature campaign of our work. Additionally, with the People vs. Fossil Fuels coalition we work alongside 1,100 other groups to build the movement to uplift Indigenous and frontline communities and end the era of fossil fuels once and for all.
Food & Water Watch and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Action, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
