As the People’s Lawyer, I successfully stood up to Jeff Sessions and defended Washington’s voter-approved marijuana initiative.
Washington led as the first state to legalize recreational cannabis, and every year more states follow our lead. But the federal government’s outdated drug laws are putting Washington workers at risk.
That’s why I am advocating for the immediate passage of the SAFE Banking Act.
So far in 2022, over 50 cannabis stores in Washington were robbed — many of them perpetrated by armed assailants — and two of which resulted in death.
The SAFE Banking Act allows cannabis retailers to use cashless payment options like credit and debit cards. It is a vital step towards keeping Washingtonians safe.
Right now, cannabis retailers are shut out from the traditional banking system, which forces them to operate strictly in cash. This makes cannabis stores targets for criminals who take advantage of the large amounts of cash on hand.
Will you stand with me and sign our petition to tell Congress we need action NOW to keep Washingtonians safe?
This legislation cannot wait. Washington businesses are incurring enormous physical and financial risks to sustain their operations. Store owners must pay out of their own pockets to hire armed security, and retail employees are being assaulted and even killed.
This cycle cannot continue. Here in Washington, we’ve led the charge on legalizing marijuana and have begun to expunge eligible criminal convictions for marijuana-related offenses. We can’t let DC lag behind.
Washington needs action now. Will you stand with me and tell Congress we can’t afford to wait on the SAFE Banking Act?
I will continue fighting to defend the will of the People and protect I-502.
Thank you,
Bob
