Mehdi Hasan & Ayman Mohyeldin are covering events in Palestine like never before in US mainstream media Dear Email, American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) actively seeks a transformation in U.S. mainstream media coverage of events in Palestine, and after decades of incessantly pro-Israel and unbalanced coverage of the Israeli occupation, we are witnessing a noticeable shift in some media coverage that compliments and reflects what Gallup polls have confirmed about American opinion on Palestine. Two journalists who have embodied and spearheaded efforts to cover Palestine in a more objective and balanced manner are Mehdi Hasan and Ayman Mohyeldin. AMP thanks Hasan and Mohyeldin for their trailblazing coverage of events in Palestine. Throughout their tenures in journalism, MSNBC’s Hasan and Mohyeldin have provided fair, balanced, and justice-driven coverage of the Israeli occupation’s egregious human rights abuses. Juxtaposed with much of the mainstream media’s coverage of Palestine, Hasan and Mohyeldin are a breath of fresh air. Sign our letter to thank Mehdi Hasan and Ayman Mohyeldin for their Palestine coverage! It is a matter of observable and data-driven fact that American mainstream media coverage of events in Palestine has lacked objectivity and suffered from an acute pro-Israel bias. Just last week, the murder of US citizen and Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh served as a grotesque reminder of this reality. As news broke of her murder, the Associated Press stated that Abu Akleh was “killed by gunfire”. Ironically, the Associated Press refused to follow their own oft-referenced AP StyleBook, which clarifies that the subject of the sentence should be included when it is clear. It was clear that “Israeli gunfire” was responsible for Abu Akleh’s murder. Another example of this lack of ethical and professional standards came in the New York Times coverage of Abu Akleh’s killing. Immediately after her murder, the NYT’s initial headline read “Shireen Abu Akleh, Palestinian Journalist, Dies, Aged 51”. Earlier in March of this year, in a similar story, the NYT covered the murder of a U.S journalist in Ukraine with this headline – “Brent Renaud, an American journalist, is killed in Ukraine”. After social media uproar that called out the hypocrisy of the headline, the NYT changed the headline to “Trailblazing Palestinian Journalist Killed in West Bank.” Hasan and Mohyeldin’s most recent coverage of events in Palestine on MSNBC serves as a reminder of the objective and professional standard of journalism that Americans are so often deprived of. Just yesterday, The Mehdi Hasan Show highlighted Representative Rashida Tlaib’s introduction of Res. 1123, “Recognizing the Nakba and Palestinian refugees’ rights”. And just last week, Mohyeldin delivered an emotional and heartfelt monologue on his longtime friend Shireen Abu Akleh’s murder, demanding that an independent investigation be devoid of Israeli involvement. And today, backtracking on previous announcements, we’ve learned that the Israeli military will not be investigating the murder of Abu Akleh. The Israeli military killed a citizen of its biggest economic and military sponsor, and the U.S is yet to demand an independent investigation. AMP implores media outlets and journalists, both domestic and international, to replicate the example that these journalists have set, objectively stating the facts, delivering the news in a justice-driven manner, and avoiding the facade of "neutrality" that translates to complicity. Sign our letter to thank these two journalists for their continuous efforts! |
