Dear John, India Walton, who won the Democratic primary election for Mayor of Buffalo last year as a socialist, pointed out in response to the recent massacre there that segregation and neglect of Black communities created the conditions for white supremacist violence to proliferate. It will take more than words to uproot racism in the US. In fact, it’s going to take radical reform of the country. And we can’t wait! That is why we are marching on our nation’s capital June 18 with the Poor People’s March and Low Wage Workers’ Assembly. Will you join us? Make a pledge today to get on the bus! Some 90 have pledged so far. We need just 10 more to get to 100! If you cannot be there yourself, can you donate $50 to help us cover the cost of a young comrade’s ticket? Speaking in Richmond, VA at the 2016 Fight for $15 and a Union Conference, Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II declared to those who had marched on the capital of the Old Confederacy, “In a country where tens of thousands die every year from low wages and poverty,” where “corporate crooks get free bailout money, while we arrest people and put people in jail who are fighting for $15 — we’ve got to raise up now!” Then and now, Rev. Barber emphasizes, as we do, the political fight we must take up against the right-wing in this country, in order to make progress. “In the 11 Southern states, from North Carolina to Texas — if you control the South, you control 22 Senate seats,” he said in Richmond. “You only need four more from the other 39 states to be in control.” The Poor People’s Campaign is building on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this Juneteenth weekend to build a grassroots and political fight against racism, poverty, the war economy, and ecological devastation. And to that we must add, the fight to defend abortion rights. It is important for the Communist Party USA to have a strong organized presence at this national mobilization. That means you! Will you be there? Or, can you donate $50 for someone else to be there? If you need assistance getting to DC, please speak with your club or District. Let’s get organized! It’s time to march.
