Come learn with us! Our May webinars feature experts discussing a range of topics relating to Family Planning Services for Adolescents that can increase your knowledge, skills, and abilities to service and support young people.

Each webinar is $25 unless otherwise noted and includes continuing education credit for multiple disciplines. Scholarships are also available.

South Texas Summit - Save the Date!

Our 5th Annual South Texas Adolescent Health Summit is scheduled for August 11-12, 2022 at the Harlingen Convention center. Registration opens soon.
 
It’s a Wrap, Y’all!

Our 11th Annual Symposium will go down in history as a success. Over the course of three days, we hosted 300 participants and 48 speakers, along with 10 sponsors and 16 exhibitors. We thank everyone who joined us in person and virtually and truly enjoyed seeing you engaged during the event. Thanks to you, we achieved our goal to connect, learn and inspire one another.

We are also incredibly proud of our Texas Campaign Young Ambassadors Daniela Cisneros and Elizabeth Tang, who participated as panelists during the Symposium, and their continued efforts in creating equitable access to adolescent reproductive healthcare.

Next year’s Symposium will be held in Spring 2023. We are scouting locations now and will send out a Save the Date as soon as we nail down the details.

Data of the Month

It may sound like something out of another century, but rates of syphilis are on the rise. Though easily treatable with antibiotics if diagnosed early, untreated syphilis during pregnancy can cause serious lifelong issues or even stillbirth. In the last five years, counts of syphilis during pregnancy nearly doubled, despite the total number of births dropping. Across all births in 2020, teens aged 18-19 were most likely to have syphilis during pregnancy, at a rate of 265 per 100,000.

This month, we have lots of exciting news to share about our collaborative work. The Texas Campaign partners with others across the state to leverage local and regional resources with statewide systems change. Read about our inspiring projects below. 
 
Texas Foster Youth Health Initiative

The Texas Foster Youth Health Initiative (TFYHI) establishes, funds, coordinates, and supports a multidisciplinary network of community partners to develop and test cutting edge sexual health interventions for youth and their caregivers.

Texas Campaign Sexual Health Educator, Denise Lewis and Healthy Futures of Texas Project Coordinator, Eleni Pacheco are hosting a free workshop that will examine trauma young people experience at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and ideological levels and the potential providers have to de-normalize violence through their community roles. The workshop is scheduled for May 26, 2022, from 12-1pm CST.

Texas Is Ready

The Texas Is Ready Coalition is composed of three organizations with a shared vision that every Texas youth deserves the information they need for a lifetime of healthy relationships and positive sexual health outcomes.

Texas Is Ready is still accepting Texas School Districts and Charter Schools into the Community of Practice (COP)!

The Community of Practice is a grant-funded initiative that provides school districts with tailored support in assessing, selecting, implementing and maintaining sex education and health education, using research-based tools and resources designed by the University of Texas School of Public Health. This process is designed to fit into busy schedules, while also providing opportunities to share best practices and learn from other districts. While the hope is that districts will take full advantage of program offerings, participation can be as simple as working through a district self-assessment and receiving resources to help navigate through the process of implementation.

As part of the service package that Texas Is Ready has prepared for the Community of Practice (COP), we invite you to participate in our May webinars.

May 26, 12-1pm: Teaching sex education with fidelity.

Texas Is Ready experts will share best practices for teaching sex ed to ensure that lessons are efficacious and taught in a safe learning environment.


May 31, 12-1 pm: Community Advocacy for Sex Education.

Texas Is Ready experts will guide Texas parents, students, and community members on how to support health education in schools.

Would you like to know more about Parent Opt-in Requirements for Sex Education & Abuse Prevention?
 

Parent opt-in forms are already being distributed to students in some Texas school districts. Texas Is Ready is helping to ensure parents/caregivers are aware that the forms have been distributed and that there is a due date for them to be returned to the schools. Additionally, we want parents/caregivers to have all of the information they need, so in the Texas Is Ready blog post we are answering questions such as, "What is the parent opt-in form?" and "What are my rights?"

Texas Youth-Friendly Initiative

The Texas Youth-Friendly Initiative (TYFI) helps build the capacity of health centers to improve care delivery to youth ages 10-24 through their participation in an evidence-based model developed by the Adolescent Health Initiative at the University of Michigan. 
TYFI Clinic Spotlight

This month we are spotlighting one of the five TYFI clinics in Cohort 4. TYFI Project Director, J.R. Chester, interviewed Ashley Gonzalez McClure from Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, Tyler Health Center and shared their amazing work.
