I wanted to make sure you saw the email I sent about the disturbing Republican primary results in Pennsylvania. Please don't click delete. It's incredibly important. — Robert Reich
Dear John,
Tuesday night, we got some truly terrifying news for our democracy.
Doug Mastriano, a January 6 insurrectionist and Trump-backed Big Lie conspiracy theorist, won the Republican nomination for governor of Pennsylvania.
Mastriano isn't just another Trump Republican. He was directly involved in a scheme to overturn the 2020 election by sending an "alternate" slate of pro-Trump electors to the Electoral College — despite the fact that Trump lost Pennsylvania by more than 80,000 votes.
And if Mastriano wins in November, he will appoint the secretary of state, who will oversee the 2024 election results in one of the most important battleground states in the country.
Make no mistake: Trump and his allies are putting the pieces in place to steal the next election, and we must stop them.
Inequality Media Civic Action is planning to run the biggest midterm election campaign program in our history. Will you make a donation and help stop Trump and his Big Lie conspiracy theorists from taking control of our elections?
Donald Trump failed to overturn the 2020 election only after courageous election officials — secretaries of state in particular — rightfully certified the results, despite heavy pressure from Trump to "find" the extra votes he needed to win.
But now, Republicans who claim that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump are running for these key election oversight positions in battleground states all over the country so they will have the power to declare Trump the winner in 2024, regardless of the election results.
No candidate is more dangerous than Doug Mastriano, the newly nominated Republican candidate for governor of Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania is the fourth-largest state in the country and the biggest state that flipped from 2016 to 2020. Critically, it's also a state where the governor appoints the secretary of state, who oversees elections, counts the votes, and certifies the results.
I agree with those in the media who are saying that Tuesday's results are in one sense "good news for Democrats," because Republicans nominated extreme candidates who could be unelectable in the general election. However, these results are not good for the country. Because if we lose, our very democracy is in mortal danger.
Between now and November, we must do everything we can to alert voters about what's at stake — especially young people, who tend to vote less in midterm elections. Our creative team is producing eye-catching, sharable viral videos to spread the word to the millions of people following us across social media, and then getting those folks to share those videos with their friends, and their friends, and so on.
To go big starting right now, we need to raise more money than we ever have for any midterm election. Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help save our democracy from the Trump cronies trying to take over our elections?
Thanks for helping us set the record straight,
Robert Reich
