It’s Sherry and Sydney, Gretchen’s daughters, and we wanted to write to you about the recent news regarding Roe v. Wade.
When our mom first saw the news that the Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, one of the first calls she made was to us. She wanted to check in on how we were feeling and tell us that while this was not the reality yet, it could soon become real.
Like so many girls and women in Michigan, we look up to our mom for her strong leadership and her decisive actions to protect choice in our state. She is fighting like hell to make sure that we don’t have fewer rights than she did growing up.
Michigan has a very old law on the books that bans abortion in almost all cases, and it would go back into effect overnight if Roe was overturned. Our mom saw the direction that the Supreme Court was taking Roe, and she knew she had to act – so she filed a lawsuit to affirm the right to abortion and ensure Michigan’s 1931 ban never goes back into effect.
She did this not just for us, but for all Michiganders who rely on the protections granted under Roe. And it’s actions like this that make us proud to call her our mom.
