[link removed] [[link removed]]Hey Team, my name is Kevin McDonald. As a recent volunteer for Dave Harden’s campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives, I was eager to hear what he would have to say at a “Meet the Candidates” night at the Jarrettsville firehouse. As I drove the back roads of northern Baltimore County into Harford County, I thought back to the Fall of 2016 when my wife and I took a weekend drive to the Antietam Battlefield.
I remembered how surprised I was at the number of Trump yard signs we’d seen while driving those back roads – and how they foreshadowed the results to come that November. And I thought about how this event was being held in a similar rural Maryland setting, not a promising venue for a Democrat.
Upon arrival, I was surprised by how large the crowd was. Given the lengthy slate of offices and candidates for those offices, I expected we were in for a long night. But things moved along fast.
As the first few candidates spoke, I suffered through the requisite cheap applause lines about enhancing border security, resisting public health measures, alarm about how history is being taught, and the need to support the Constitution (ironically, from a gubernatorial candidate who took people to the January 6th “tourist event,” and tried to impeach Governor Hogan over his public health measures).
When Dave’s turn to speak came, he connected with the audience about his deep roots in the area, attendance at local schools, and his promise to work on real problems that real people like those in attendance faced – not wasting time on “the culture wars tiddlywinks.”

Dave is a real patriot. A problem solver. A deep-rooted Maryland country boy who went out into the broader world, but never lost touch with those rural roots and rural folk.
That night in Jarrettsville, he showed up and he listened. Dave connected with that crowd of west Harford County neighbors like no other Democratic in the state has in recent memory.
My role as a volunteer is to help him get that word out in time for the July 19th primary and November general elections.
