Voters across Pennsylvania went to the polls yesterday and confirmed our endorsed candidate Josh Shapiro as the Democratic candidate for Governor. While we’re excited to do whatever it takes to get Shapiro over the top this fall, we’re not looking forward to going up against extremist candidate Doug Mastriano, who won the Republican nomination.

I can’t even begin to underscore how dangerous a Mastriano administration would be. From leading efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Pennsylvania and introducing more than a dozen bills to make it harder for people to vote, to attending the insurrection and funding chartered buses there with his own campaign contributions, there’s nothing this guy wouldn’t do to drag Pennsylvania way backwards and take power away from the people.

I’m not gonna lie, Mastriano will be tough to beat in a flippable state. That’s why we can’t take a post-primary break. We need to ramp up our efforts to get as many voters as possible to support Josh Shapiro this fall , which will take more calls, more conversations at doors, and more digital ads targeting Pennsylvanians across the state. Unlike QAnon conspiracy peddler Doug Mastriano, Josh Shapiro is focused on the issues facing Pennsylvanians right now — like improving our schools, making our communities safer, lowering costs, and creating good-paying union jobs in growing green industries that will speed up our state’s recovery while making our economy more competitive and sustainable. And while he’ll work with anyone to get things done, he has no patience for politicians who are trying to drive us apart and take away our freedom to vote.

Mastriano, on the other hand, has supported the sham election “audit” that’s costing taxpayers money and trying to obtain the private information of 9 million Pennsylvanians. As a state senator, he voted against the environment every single time and opposed critical investments to repair our roads and bridges and create thousands of Pennsylvania jobs. And his very real actions during the January 6 insurrection resulted in a subpoena from Congress for his involvement in trying to overturn the election.

With an agenda and actions this extreme, Doug Mastriano would have the power to do real damage to the Commonwealth if he gained control of the Governor’s office, which has the power to certify or decertify election results, appoint a Secretary of State, and protect or restrict our rights — including the right to vote, the right to access an abortion, and the right to clean air and water.

Doug Mastriano would threaten all of those rights and so much more, which is why we need a proven leader like Josh Shapiro to keep defending them. Throughout his career, Attorney General Shapiro has taken on the big fights and delivered results for Pennsylvanians, from filing criminal charges against the Mariner East II pipeline, to suing the EPA for ignoring its responsibility to control methane pollution.
