Yesterday’s primary election results made clear that, in many states, far-right extremists and proto-fascists are firmly in control of one of America’s major political parties – and if they’re successful in November’s general elections, these candidates pose a direct threat to our cherished rights, our bodily autonomy, and every shred of social progress that we’ve fought for decades to achieve.
Look no further than Pennsylvania, where State Senator Doug Mastriano just won the primary election to become the Republican nominee for Governor.
Mastriano built his statewide campaign with the support of Christian nationalists, Big Lie supporters, and QAnon conspiracy theorists. He’s denounced what he calls “this myth of separation of church and state,” and was actually one of the insurrectionists who breached police lines last January 6 at the U.S. Capitol. [1,2]
Unfortunately there’s a very real chance that this November, the Far Right seizes control of not only the Governor’s mansion in Pennsylvania – and perhaps in other swing states – but also one or both chambers of Congress. This would mean an end to any congressional efforts to seek accountability for the insurrection of last January 6 ... and the full-throated pursuit of a policy agenda that includes a nationwide ban on abortion, ending Social Security and Medicare, and doing away with the separation of church and state.
As an organization, People For is uniquely positioned to carry out this work – with more than 40 years of experience fighting to stop hate and defend democracy, and a dedicated team of researchers on our Right Wing Watch project working to shine a spotlight on these far-right extremists.
