Hi John, president Biden recently expressed his support for cities across the country to use pandemic-related relief funds on enhancing public safety, and here in Philadelphia, this is no greater issue than our public safety.

As you may or may not know, the City of Philadelphia received significant funding from the federal government’s American Rescue Plan, meant to help the city rebound from the pandemic’s disastrous effects. However, a significant amount of these funds have yet to be used.

The President has said it himself, the upcoming summer months are likely to see continued surging crime rates in major American cities, and Philadelphia is no exception. We must use this vital funding we received to ease the burden on our police, initiate domestic violence prevention efforts, and implement far-reaching drug abuse and mental health services.

The ongoing threats to our public safety are real and they are urgent, and I’m working tirelessly to ensure that this crisis is addressed. Recently, my plan to tackle our city’s policing shortage by addressing the residency requirement was adopted. Furthermore, I have proposed legislation to boost police recruitment through hiring bonuses, aiming to greatly improve and modernize our city’s police force.

John, I have big plans for Philadelphia, and it is my utmost priority to renew faith in our city’s future. In order to do this, we must use our generous funding wisely and invest it where it is truly needed.
