Dear John,

Five or ten years from now, seniors may wake up one morning and discover that their beloved Medicare program has been completely privatized. That’s because there is a creeping effort underway by insurance companies and private entities to capture a growing share of federal Medicare dollars — money that should go toward patient care, not profit.

Among these disturbing trends is the growth of Medicare Advantage (MA), which are privately-run, publicly financed health care plans for seniors offered as an alternative to traditional Medicare plans. Today more than 40% of Medicare patients are enrolled in MA plans; yet, according to a recent report, MA plans are denying legitimate claims and refusing to authorize reasonable medical procedures.

Please sign our Emergency Petition to Congress addressed to your U.S. Representative, urging them to increase scrutiny of Medicare Advantage plans and reject any legislative effort that puts traditional Medicare on a path to full privatization.

Between 2009 and 2021, the government paid Medicare Advantage plans $140 billion more than it would have if the same patients had stayed in traditional Medicare. While MA plans may promise additional benefits and free extras like gym membership, they often restrict physician networks and deny claims, leaving patients to foot the bill.

That’s why I urge you to please sign our Petition to Congress today and tell your U.S. Representative to increase oversight of MA plans, which are raking in hefty profits — and oppose any effort to turn over more control of traditional Medicare to private entities that are driven more by profit than patient care.

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
