Writing in the Guardian, Louise Ross from the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training, provides a brief overview of vaping in the UK.

“The letter from 16 paediatric professionals (Vaping poses serious threat to children, 27 November) is an argument based on error and supposition, starting with the claim that “nobody knows exactly what substances are in these liquids”. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency knows exactly what’s in them, and UK products are highly regulated.
Surveillance by Action on Smoking and Health and Cancer Research UK points to vaping displacing smoking among young people, and that there is only negligible use among never-smokers.

The letter writers might like to consider the positive effect of parents who smoked switching to vaping, avoiding smoking-related disability and premature death. That surely improves young people’s wellbeing.”

British American Tobacco (BAT) has just reported “a good performance from combustibles, with strong price mix and share gains”.

While cigarette sales volumes fell broadly in line with an industry-wide 3.5% decline, BAT said it had been able to charge smokers more this year and take another 0.2% of the market by value. Revenue from tobacco-burning products looks like it is still going up by the 5% reported in August.

Revenues from BAT’s “new category” products, which include heated tobacco vapour devices and e-cigarettes, would now rise at the lower end of its 30-50% target range, not the midpoint. Lower e-cig sales growth reflects “the recent slowdown in the US vapour market”, which in turn reflects growing US regulation. However, the combustible tobacco sales are seemingly strong enough for BAT’s overall revenue forecasts to improve slightly.

An off-licence business and its owner have been fined by Bolton magistrates after they were caught selling illegal cigarettes. The store was visited by investigators who found a range of fake cigarettes and tobacco products without the correct health warnings and packaging.

The court heard that the business was responsible for possessing nine packets of fake Regal and Richmond cigarettes and supplying 43 packets of cigarettes and three pouches of Amber Leaf tobacco without legal packaging and 46 packets of assorted cigarette brands which did not carry the proper legal health warnings.
The business was fined a total of £1,500 plus a £50 victim surcharges after admitting the offences.

Health bosses could make smoking on hospital grounds illegal – if they get backing from the public. NHS Ayrshire and Arran are currently looking for the public’s views on the introduction of a legally enforceable smoking ban around hospital buildings.

This follows the Scottish Government’s public consultation which was published in October and would make it an offence to smoke within a specific distance around a hospital building.

A smoke-free perimeter would ensure that people who are unwell and whose health is vulnerable while they are recovering in hospital would be protected from the harm that toxic smoke drifting through windows, doorways and ventilation systems could cause.
