Team,

May is Mental Health Awareness Month – a time to raise awareness, fight stigma, and advocate for policies that support people with mental health challenges and substance use disorders.

Here in Rhode Island, the rates of people living with mental health disorders is higher than the national average. Nearly 1 in 4 Rhode Islanders report experiencing mental health disorders, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made things worse. The impact on the mental health of children is particularly troubling, with the American Academy of Pediatrics declaring a National Children’s Mental Health Emergency.

Demand for mental health services is surging in our state, and inadequate funding and reimbursement rates have led to a shortage of qualified mental health providers to meet the needs of Rhode Islanders. There are simply not enough providers to care for people and patients face long wait lists for treatment or can’t access treatment at all.

We need to take action to ensure every person living with a mental health disorder has access to the care they need. In Congress, Seth would support legislation to increase access to high-quality, affordable treatment, increase services to children in schools, and work to end the stigma attached to mental health and substance abuse disorders.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health or substance use, you can call the National Alliance on Mental Illness hotline at 800-950-NAMI or visit the Mental Health Association of Rhode Island for a list of resources.
