Last month, the Biden administration announced that the federal government will be expanding the pause on student loan payments for a sixth time, through August 31st. This comes as a relief to many borrowers struggling to make ends meet while inflation remains high, but it’s not enough. Here’s the truth: if we can repeatedly pause student debt, we can cancel it.
I’ve heard from young people across the country, from Galesburg to Cambridge, that student debt relief is one of the most important issues they face. Our nation’s combined $1.75 trillion in student loan debt prevents millions of Americans from being able to buy a home, maintain a strong credit score, or even meet basic needs. For Democrats to have any success in the midterms this November, we need to deliver on student debt relief.
Nobody should be mired in debt in order to receive an education. Our country depends on people learning the skills they need to help us strengthen our economy. That’s why I’m pushing for the Biden administration to fulfill the president’s campaign promise and forgive at least $10,000 in student debt, and up to $50,000 for working-class students and families.
We’ve promised action on student debt relief. Now it’s time to deliver.
