For years, environmental justice activists and their allies have demanded that the federal government sit up and pay attention to the unique environmental harm communities of color face. The Biden Justice Department is answering this call by creating a new Office of Environmental Justice.
The investment in this new office is urgent: 45 million Americans are breathing polluted air because of racist redlining policies. Black people are four times more likely to die due to pollution exposure than White people. The staggering systemic racism made evident by these numbers must be comprehensively addressed, and the Biden Administration’s new plan takes steps in the right direction to do just that.
At the top of the Office of Environmental Justice’s list is expanding investigations and litigation into companies that are to blame for exposing communities to dangerous pollution. This strategy goes hand in hand with President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, which will invest billions in infrastructure projects in historically marginalized areas for projects like ensuring proper functioning waste management systems and cleaning up existing chemical dumpsites.
We’re glad President Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland got the memo: Every American deserves clear skies, clean water, and fresh air regardless of income and race. These things should not be a privilege.
This progress is long overdue. And while they’re proud of the steps the Biden Administration is taking to address this crisis head-on, SEEC members know there is more work to be done. SEEC members will continue advocating that environmental justice be integrated into *all* efforts to stop climate change.
