The Nonprofit Sector Strength and Partnership Act of 2022

PEAK joined foundations and nonprofits in endorsing Independent Sector’s letter to Representatives Betty McCollum (D-MN) and Fred Upton (R-MI) in support of the Nonprofit Sector Strength and Partnership Act of 2022. The bill, introduced in Congress in April, aims to create formal, streamlined relationships between the federal government and nonprofit and charitable organizations with the goal to strengthen the sector and the communities they serve. GOVERNANCE

PEAK Board of Directors Update

PEAK’s board held their quarterly meeting on April 27 and 28. The meeting included approval of our 2021 audited financial statements and Form 990 and the approval of new officers: Cochair Miyesha Perry, Secretary Jane Ward, and Treasurer Elsa Chin, all of whom will assume their new roles on June 1. The three join Cochair Allison Gister, who began her tenure on March 1 to finish the term of Gary Romero, who needed to depart from his role. Secretary Kerri Hurley and our first Chair Emeritus Adriana Jiménez will each conclude their terms on May 31. Steve Casey and Tim Robinson will conclude their terms as cochair and treasurer respectively but will remain on the board for another year of service.

PEAK in Community

The latest news about our sector partnerships and how PEAK is advocating for more equitable grantmaking practices at conferences, convenings, and community conversations.

Satonya Fair and Betsy Reid joined the Commonwealth Foundation staff for their April Lunch and Learn, hosted by Vice President of Grants Management Andrea Landes. The discussion focused on supporting the Foundation’s DEI journey by exploring the themes elevated in PEAK’s latest Journal, Driving Racial Equity in Philanthropy, and at PEAK2022 Online.

Satonya and Chantias Ford participated in the Equitable Evaluation Initiative’s Nonprofit Pilot as an Equitable Evaluation Framework™ Practice Partner. The initiative brings together eight organizations committed to practicing the framework, connecting PEAK with peers dedicated to improving evaluation practices and processes to embed equity and thoughtful reflection in our work.

Representatives of PEAK’s staff and board participated in the collection of case stories for our participation in the United Philanthropy Forum’s Racial Equity Organizational Assessment. Participation allows PEAK to benchmark our self-reported internal equity efforts against peer organizations and provides a template for the work needed to ensure internal and external policies and practice are aligned in service of advancing racial equity.

Satonya was among eight nonprofit leaders invited to participate in the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service’s inaugural racial healing certification program, which is designed to strengthen their leadership abilities through mastery of racial healing concepts and rebuild sector infrastructure to drive equity. Her most recent learning experience with the cohort included tours of the Legacy Museum, which documents the evolution of the oppression of Black populations in our country, the Peace and Justice Memorial, and a meeting with Minnijean Brown-Trickey, one of the Little Rock Nine.
