The four years of the Trump administration brought us levels of corruption not seen since the days of Watergate. In fact, the abuses of power were far more sweeping than anything undertaken by Nixon, exposing cracks in the very foundation of our democracy. Even on his way out, Trump’s refusal to embrace a peaceful transition of power led to a violent and deadly insurrection at our Capitol.

But the end of Trump’s corrupt presidency didn’t put an end to the danger our democracy is facing. If we don’t take action, his unscrupulous behavior could be a roadmap for future presidents to abuse their power and dismantle the checks and balances vital to American democracy.

That’s why the House passed the Protecting our Democracy Act (PODA), a comprehensive bill to stop future abuses of presidential power. Send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper to demand your senators put our democracy first and pass it without delay.

The Protecting Our Democracy Act would ban presidents from personally taking money from foreign governments or U.S. taxpayer dollars, enable a timely and orderly presidential transition of power, and make it harder to seek retribution against federal whistleblowers, among other critical reforms.

Though Trump’s actions informed components of the bill, we can’t be naive. Presidents anywhere on the political spectrum could be tempted toward bad behavior, especially after seeing Trump act with such impunity. 

This is common sense legislation, and we need to ensure that all 100 senators know where their constituents stand. Sending a letter to the editor of your local newspaper is a great way to amplify an issue, put pressure on lawmakers, and educate others about how we can protect our democracy for decades to come.

How much more proof do my Senate colleagues need to understand that our democracy is at stake? We cannot allow history to repeat itself. Send a letter today so that more of your friends and neighbors know how we can curb presidential corruption once and for all.
