GOP Turnout High; Upset Win in North Carolina Congressional Race; Tight Race for Pennsylvania Senate
The primaries so far have yielded large Republican voter turnout, and last night was no different ( Townhall). A big upset came from North Carolina’s 11 th District where incumbent Madison Cawthorn conceded his race to Chuck Edwards. Fox News: Cawthorn Tuesday night made a concession phone call to state Sen. Chuck Edwards, whose legislative seat is within the House district. Edwards had the support of Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and various other GOP officials ( Fox News). The Pennsylvania Senate race between Dave McCormick and Trump-endorsed Mehmet Oz was too close to call ( New York Times).

Mariupol Has Fallen to Russia
From the story: Late Monday, the Ukrainian government appeared to surrender the key port city of Mariupol to the Russians. According to live war updates from The New York Times, capture of the Azovstal steel complex in Mariupol was the deciding factor in Russia’s apparent victory over the Ukrainians in their combat mission. In a brief remark to the Times, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky shared that their current goal was to prevent further casualties. “We hope to save the lives of our boys,” Zelensky said ( Daily Wire). Wall Street Journal: More than 260 soldiers were taken to Russian-controlled territory on Tuesday morning after Ukraine announced the end of combat operations in Mariupol. Video footage released by Russia’s Defense Ministry appeared to show the men being patted down and escorted to waiting buses. Some were on stretchers, some wrapped in bloodied bandages, and many were gaunt after weeks of surviving on minimal rations ( Wall Street Journal). Hanna Liubakova: #Ukraine @Reuters published photos of “buses with Ukrainian servicemen from Azovstal leaving Mariupol ( Twitter). NBC: Capturing Mariupol is key because it would allow Russian forces in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula it invaded and annexed in 2014, to link up with those in eastern Ukraine, where Moscow has refocused its efforts ( NBC).

Rep. Tlaib and Squad Introduce Resolution Normalizing Anti-Israeli, Anti-Semitic Sentiment
The resolution encourages official recognition of Nakba — an addition to Palestinian calendar marking the “disaster” of the 1948 establishment of the Israeli state. Fox News: House members led by Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., introduced a resolution Monday calling for U.S. recognition of the “Nakba,” a term meaning “catastrophe” that is typically used by Palestinians to refer to the establishment of the state of Israel… It calls for the U.S. to “commemorate the Nakba through official recognition and remembrance,” while claiming that this “refers not only to a historical event but to an ongoing process of Israel’s expropriation of Palestinian land and its dispossession of the Palestinian people that continues to this day” ( Fox News). Tlaib: Today, I introduced a resolution recognizing the Nakba (catastrophe), where 400 Palestinian towns and villages were destroyed, over 700,000 Palestinians uprooted from their homes, and made refugees ( Twitter). From Haaretz: Yet for decades, no day was singled out as a day of commemoration, though some Palestinian Israelis took advantage of the national holiday on Israeli Independence Day to visit their lost homes or deserted villages within Israel. This would change in 1998. As Israelis were preparing an elaborate celebration for the nation’s 50th anniversary, Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat decided that Palestinians should mark the 50th anniversary of the Nakba as well. He declared May 15, the day after Israeli independence in 1948, as Nakba Day (Haaretz).

Biden Takes Aim at “Assault Weapons” in Wake of Buffalo Shooting
Another shooting, another call for gun control. Katie Pavlich: Speaking from Buffalo, New York Tuesday morning President Joe Biden falsely claimed the ban on semi-automatic sporting rifles from 1994 to 2004 cut down on violence and shootings. He made the statement while pushing for gun control after a teenager killed ten people in a local grocery store over the weekend. This is a claim Biden has repeatedly made while attempting to take advantage of tragedy. But according to data provided by the Department of Justice, the ban cannot be credited with reducing violence or mass shootings ( Townhall). Townhall: BIDEN: “We can keep assault weapons off our streets. We’ve done it before. I did it when we passed the crime bill last time” ( Twitter).

Iraq Blocks China From Purchasing and Controlling Oilfields
From the story: Iraq’s oil ministry thwarted three prospective deals last year that would have handed Chinese firms more control over its oilfields and led to an exodus of international oil majors that Baghdad wants to invest in its creaking economy. Since the start of 2021, plans by Russia’s Lukoil and U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil to sell stakes in major fields to Chinese state-backed firms have hit the buffers after interventions from Iraq’s oil ministry, according to Iraqi oil officials and industry executives ( Reuters). Breitbart: Even with these big takeover deals blocked in 2021 and 2022, China still has a strong position in Iraqi oil, having “won most energy deals and contracts awarded over the past four years.” Chinese state firms have secured a “dominant position” by undercutting the profit margins desired by most other investors. Baghdad may not be able to keep Beijing at bay for long, as analysts told Reuters the Western push for “green energy” is making it harder for Iraq to offer the kind of deals that would attract anyone but rapacious China ( Breitbart).

Deal Breaker: Musk Demands SEC Look Into Twitter Bot Accounts
New York Post: Elon Musk is calling on the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate Twitter’s claims that less than 5% of its daily users are spam and bot accounts. Musk, the Tesla CEO who said he would back out of his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter if the company failed to prove it was adequately cracking down on spam and bot accounts, posted a poll on Tuesday ( New York Post). Elon Musk: 20% fake/spam accounts, while 4 times what Twitter claims, could be *much* higher. My offer was based on Twitter’s SEC filings being accurate. Yesterday, Twitter’s CEO publicly refused to show proof of <5%. This deal cannot move forward until he does ( Twitter).

DHS Secretary Mayorkas Visits Border One Week Before Title 42 Expires
From the story: With less than a week before Title 42 is to expire, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and his top leaders spent Tuesday touring the South Texas border planning, learning and preparing for what could be a surge of migrants crossing from Mexico ( Border Report). Daily Mail: It also comes the morning after Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released numbers for April encounters, which is the highest yet of Joe Biden’s presidency. ‘It is very important to note that while, of course, we are preparing for the end of Title 42 based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s decision that it will end on May 23, that does not mean that the border is open beginning May 23,’ Mayorkas insisted. ‘We continue to enforce the laws of this country,’ he added. ‘We continue to remove individuals who do not qualify for relief under the laws of this country’ ( Daily Mail).

Fox News: U.S. authorities on Monday announced the discovery of a massive tunnel stretching under the U.S.-Mexico border that was likely used to transport drugs undetected. The over 1,700-foot “fully operational” tunnel runs from Tijuana to an industrial warehouse in San Diego, California. Authorities said it contains a “sophisticated” structural system that was likely used to smuggle heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl into the U.S. U.S. authorities did not say how long the tunnel had been operating but announced $25 million worth of drugs were seized from the tunnel and its operatives over the weekend ( Fox News).
