Today marks 68 years since the Supreme Court made the landmark decision Brown v. Board of Education and declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

This was a monumental decision, but the promise of progress decided so many years ago has fallen short. Not only are our public schools in many places almost as segregated as they were before Brown, but far-right elected officials and appointed judges are continuing to perpetuate the legacy of systemic racism in education.

As governor, I’m committed to making Maryland a national leader in combating modern-day segregation and promoting equity in every classroom. When I served as President Obama’s Secretary of Education, I worked to change the painful reality that our education systems fail to ensure equitable opportunities for so many of our Black and brown students. And while I’m very proud of the work our administration did to close opportunity gaps, promote diversity in our schools, and expand Pell Grant access, I know we still have much more to do.

Every child deserves an equal chance for education and opportunity, no matter their race, zip code, or background. A King-Siri administration will work tirelessly to make that the reality for all Maryland students and families.
