UNC’s Incoming Dean Also Leads Action Coalition

The University of North Carolina has named a new dean for its school of nursing: Valerie Howard, EdD, RN, ANE. UNC’s announcement of the August 1 start proudly notes that Howard is a nationally recognized academic innovator, accomplished higher education leader, and co-lead of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action North Carolina Action Coalition.

Delaware Granted $500,000 for Well-Being Initiatives for Nurses

The Delaware Nurses Association will receive $500,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act to support nurses’ mental health and well-being—a project that the Delaware Action Coalition will co-lead. Funds will be used to provide free, easy-to-access tools and programming for the state’s workforce of 22,000 licensed nurses, many left exhausted by the pressures of the pandemic.

Powerhouse Nurse and CEO, Now Retired, Says: “Lead!”
Maria Gomez, MPH, RN, has retired from nursing and the C-suite, but still has plenty to say. After becoming a nurse, Gomez started Washington, D.C.’s Mary’s Center, an integrated model of health care that now serves 60,000 people each year. Nurses have a huge role in influencing people, policies, and organizations, she says, urging them to take leadership positions.
