We’re behind on our fundraising targets for this month. Let me take a
second to talk about what that means.

Every month, my team sets fundraising goals and targets. Sometimes, we
write you emails like this one talking about those numbers — $15,000,
$25,000, $30,000.

I know that sometimes those numbers feel arbitrary. And if they feel
“made-up,” it wouldn’t make sense for us to assume you’d care about them.
But today, I want you to think a little bit less about that number, and
instead, about what we value.

Our campaign values an inclusive movement — that’s why we refuse 100% of
all corporate PAC donations.

Our campaign values giving everyone a voice in the process — that’s why my
staff makes sure I have enough time to host town halls, talk to
constituents, and make sure people know I’m there for them.

Our campaign values everyone’s right to vote — which is why we have field
staff registering new voters, walking them through the process, and making
sure their voice is heard in this democracy.

I would like to say there’s not a price tag on these values, because
sadly, there is. When we don’t meet a fundraising target or goal, we’ve
got to cut back somehow. We have to make due with less.

Since we refuse all corporate PAC money, we end up in this situation a
little more often than I’d like. But that’s a sacrifice I’d make every
time — because I never want to be accountable to big corporations in
Washington.

Our choices have allowed us the freedom to fight for universal health
care, middle-class families, an economy that works for all, and protecting
democracy. And those ideals are priceless.
