John,
Since the insurrection, fossil fuel companies have given more than $1 million to campaigns and political groups supporting the Sedition Caucus.
Let that sink in: $1 million of Big Oil money helping to re-elect seditionists.
Companies like ExxonMobil, Valero, Chevron and Marathon have given big to House Republican leadership and members who sit on the House Energy and Commerce Committee—despite the fact that these same members voted to reject 2020 election results, have spread lies about dead people voting in the 2020 election and opposed the creation of the committee investigating January 6th. Unfortunately, Big Oil has chosen, like so many other industries, to put influence over democracy. Read our full investigation here.
But it’s not all bad news: CREW also has a new report about the companies who have kept their promises not to fund the Sedition Caucus. While most companies that initially pledged to pause or stop donations to the members of Congress who rejected the election results have since abandoned their pledges, 85 companies have so far kept their commitments.
Lyft, Target, Pepsi, Zillow, Marriott, Whirlpool, eBay—these are a few of the companies that have shown that putting democracy above access to politicians really can be done. For more, read our full report—and then share on Twitter, Facebook, or by forwarding this email.
While it’s disappointing that companies have now donated more than $25 million to re-elect the Sedition Caucus, it’s encouraging that a number of high-profile companies have kept their commitments so far. Together, we can keep the pressure on the companies who have gone back on their promises, and let the ones who’ve stood strong know that their commitment to democracy hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Thank you,
The CREW Team
