There is a gap in our democracy, friend.

Despite record-high turnout in recent elections, historic patterns of lower voter turnout for youth and people of color have continued.

Will you take 30 seconds to help us address this representation gap, friend? Send an email to the Senate and Assembly Budget Chairs asking them to invest in the necessary voter education and outreach for a more inclusive democracy.

California Environmental Voters is advocating for the state to invest $85 million of the state budget this year and commit this funding for the next three years for improved voter education and outreach at the state and local levels in order to reach voters that for too long have been underrepresented in democracy — youth and people of color.

(Remember friend, that’s $85 million in a state budget that ranges between $260 and $270 BILLION annually.)

There are four key decision makers in Sacramento who have tremendous influence over whether this critical democratic reform gets funded: Assembly Budget Committee Chairs Wendy Carrillo and Philip Ting and Senate Budget Committee Chairs Sydney Kamlager and Nancy Skinner.

We need to make sure they know this is a priority for all Californians!

This funding will go far in ensuring that our democracy is representative of Californians and that all eligible voters in California are fully informed about their voting options and voting rights. Because an inclusive and representative democracy is a strong democracy.

It’s also an essential way to avoid worsening California’s already significant age and racial voter turnout gaps that hold us back from achieving climate justice.

Let’s build a democracy that is truly representative of all Californians. Email the four Budget Chairs and urge them to invest in a representative democracy.

Thank you for fighting for a democracy that represents us all!
