Sweden Joining Finland in Bid to Join NATO

Turkey does not support the additions to NATO. From the story: Despite repeated threats from Russia, Finland is poised to join the U.S.-led NATO military alliance. The historic move — set to be mirrored by Sweden — will effectively double the length of NATO’s land border with Russia. Russia, and Putin in particular, has long considered NATO a threat. The Kremlin has defended its war in Ukraine partly as a means of pushing the Western alliance back further from its borders — a tactic which, given Finland and Sweden’s accession bids, appears to have backfired spectacularly (CBS). New York Post: On Monday, Putin said he sees no direct threat to Russia from Finland and Sweden joining the alliance but warned NATO against bolstering the military capabilities of the two nations. “The expansion of the military infrastructure to this territory will definitely provoke a response,” Putin said at a summit of the pro-Moscow Collective Security Treaty Organization, which includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. “And we’ll see what it’s going to be like depending on the threats this would pose to us” (New York Post). Wall Street Journal: If approved, analysts say the move would significantly enhance the bloc’s military capabilities on land, sea and in the air (Wall Street Journal).

New York Redistricting Map Spells Trouble for Democrats

Fox News: A draft of a new congressional districting map for the state of New York appears to give Republicans a big boost compared to the lines Democratic lawmakers had originally drawn. The Democrats’ plan was scrapped and redistricting placed into the hands of a court-appointed special master after a January ruling that the initial map was the result of improper gerrymandering (Fox News). Jeff Coltin: Quick, messy analysis: this draft map seems devastating for House Dems. Five districts lean Republican. And NY-2, 3, 18, 19 and 22 are all tossups. 4 and 17 could be won by a Republican in a wave year. That’s like *12 of 26* districts in play for the GOP (Twitter). New York Post: The new lines also scramble the political maps for upcoming Democratic primaries. Parts of the Bronx and Westchester would no longer be linked to Nassau County, which will likely disadvantage state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi (D-Bronx) in her quest to win a congressional seat (New York Post).

Trafalgar Poll: Businesses Should Just Do Business, Not Politics

From the story: Nearly 9 in 10 American voters want corporations to stay out of politics, according to a poll released Monday. The survey by the Trafalgar Group found that 87.1% of likely voters from all political affiliations said they were either very or somewhat likely “to stop using a product or service of a company that openly advocates for a political agenda” that contradicts their beliefs. The remaining 12.8% said they were either not likely or not very likely to do so (Washington Times). Daily Caller: A number of American companies recently announced they would be paying for their employees abortion travel costs, meeting with significant backlash from Republicans. Streaming platform Netflix recently released an update to an employee memo where they explicitly told employees that “If you find it hard to support our content breadth, Netflix may not be the best place for you” (Daily Caller).

Abbott, FDA Reach Agreement to Reopen Michigan Baby Formula Factory in Coming Weeks

From the story: On Monday evening, baby formula producer Abbott announced it had reached a deal with the Food and Drug Administration, laying out a path to reopen a factory in Sturgis, Michigan, that shut down amid recalls earlier this year, contributing to the current shortage. In a statement, the company confirmed that it has entered into a consent decree with the FDA, in which the agency and company agree on the benchmarks required to resume production and ensure the facility meets safety guidelines (USA Today). Abbott: Once the FDA confirms the initial requirements for start-up have been met, Abbott could restart the site within two weeks. From the time Abbott restarts the site, it will take six to eight weeks before product is available on shelves (Abbott).

California Superior Court Declares Law Requiring Women on Corporate Boards Unconstitutional

Gov. Jerry Brown knew the law was likely unenforceable when instituted in 2018. National Review: A California judge struck down a 2018 state law requiring public companies to have female directors on their boards after finding the mandate violated the equal protection clause of the state’s constitution. The law required publicly held companies headquartered in California to have one member who identifies as a woman on their board of directors by the end of 2019. It then required boards with five directors to have two women and boards with six or more members to have three women by January 2022 (National Review). Associated Press: Although the law carried potential hefty penalties for failing to file an annual report or comply with the law, a chief in the secretary of state’s office acknowledged during the trial that it was toothless. No fines have ever been levied and there was no intention to do so, Betsy Bogart testified. Further, a letter that surfaced during trial from former Secretary of State Alex Padilla warned Brown weeks before he signed the law that it was probably unenforceable. “Any attempt by the secretary of state to collect or enforce the fine would likely exceed its authority,” Padilla wrote (Associated Press).

Former Fed Reserve Chair Bernanke on Inflation: Mistakes Were Made

Daily Wire: Former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke said during a Monday interview that the central bank’s delayed inflation response “was a mistake.” The Fed had dropped its benchmark interest rate to near-zero levels at the outset of COVID-19 and the lockdown-induced recession in a bid to stimulate economic activity. Over the past few months, however, the Fed began aggressively increasing rates in response to rampant inflation pressuring consumers. “The question is why did they delay that… Why did they delay their response? I think in retrospect, yes, it was a mistake,” he said. “And I think they agree it was a mistake” (Daily Wire). CNBC: In late summer of 2020, the Fed changed its policy framework to indicate that it would allow inflation to run hotter than normal in the interest of assuring a complete and inclusive jobs recovery. When inflation began running higher than the 2% target in the spring of 2021, policymakers said they expected it to be “transitory” due to pandemic-specific factors that would abate. In recent days, several Fed officials have defended their response, saying that when it became clearer that inflation was more persistent, they began using “forward guidance” to tell the market that tighter policy was coming (CNBC).

McDonald’s Closing All Russian Locations

From the story: McDonald’s became the symbol of glasnost in action 30 years ago when it opened its first restaurant in Moscow. But after temporarily shutting down more than 800 restaurants following the invasion of Ukraine, McDonald’s has decided to leave Russia altogether. The burger chain will sell its Russia business, saying the “humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, and the precipitating unpredictable operating environment, have led McDonald’s to conclude that continued ownership of the business in Russia is no longer tenable, nor is it consistent with McDonald’s values” (CNN). USA Today: McDonald’s will become one of the first restaurant companies to remove its business in its entirety after having closed its stores in early March but still paid employees – a trend that other American companies such as Starbucks and Pizza Hut also executed. Up until now, many companies had resisted a full shutdown because of employee welfare, but the overarching issue of the war held too much weight (USA Today).

Fauci Says He Will Resign if Trump Returns

Business Insider: White House Chief Medical Advisor Anthony Fauci said on Sunday that if former President Donald Trump returned to the White House, he would not stay in the role (Business Insider). CNN: CNN’s @acosta asks Dr. Anthony Fauci if he would return to the White House if Donald Trump was elected for a second term. Hear his response (Twitter). New York Post: In March of this year, Fauci said he had no intention of retiring from government, saying he wants to wait for the US to be “really out” of the COVID-19 pandemic before he moves on (New York Post).

New Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre Says Raising Corporate Taxes Will Help Inflation

Daily Wire: Fox News’ White House Correspondent Peter Doocy read Jean-Pierre a recent tweet from Biden’s Twitter account word for word, which stated, “You want to bring down inflation? Let’s make sure the wealthiest corporations pay their fair share.” The reporter followed that with a simple question: “How does raising taxes on corporations reduce inflation” (Daily Wire)? Townhall: DOOCY: “The President’s Twitter account posted the other day…How does raising taxes on corporations reduce inflation?” KJP: “Um, so…Are you talking about a specific tweet” (Twitter). RNC Research: “How does raising taxes on corporations lower the cost of gas, the cost of a used car, the cost of food for everyday Americans?” KARINE JEAN-PIERRE: Climate change (Twitter).

Taliban Does Away with US-Sponsored Human Rights Council in Afghanistan

From the story: Taliban authorities in Afghanistan dissolved five key departments of the former US-backed government, including the country’s human rights commission, deeming them unnecessary in the face of a financial crunch, an official said. Afghanistan faced a budget deficit of 44bn Afghanis ($501m) this financial year, Taliban authorities said as they announced their first annual national budget since taking over last August. “Because these departments were not deemed necessary and were not included in the budget, they have been dissolved,” said Innamullah Samangani, the Taliban government’s deputy spokesperson (Guardian).
