Growing up, I learned that if I ever wanted a birthday party, I would have to conform to my father’s racist expectations and exclude my black and brown friends. That was something I refused to accept.
In my 47 years on Earth, I have never had a birthday party, had my friends over for sleepovers or had a group movie night. Any time spent with my friends was done away from home and away from my father so he wouldn’t spew his vile judgment upon them.
I had an incredible conversation the other day with two wonderful black ladies, and, when the topic of my father came up, they hugged me and promised that as soon as I won the race they would throw my first birthday party for me. A small gesture, but one that signaled a unity this country desperately needs.
