We shouldn't have to live like this.

John–

Yesterday, a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in a predominantly Black community where he killed at least 10 people and wounded several more. Law enforcement are investigating the shooting as both a hate crime and a case of racially-motivated extremism based on evidence they have collected.

White supremacy is deadly, especially when it's combined with easy access to guns. The shooting in Buffalo yesterday was another example of that. My heart goes out to my neighbors who are affected by this horrific act.

Grocery shopping shouldn't cost you your life. We shouldn't have to live like this.

Gun violence inflicts long-lasting trauma on too many families. It's crippling our communities. That's why I signed on as a co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition that Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown is a founding member of. We are committed to doing everything we can to end this scourge on our cities.

But the reality is, it can't just be up to mayors to solve the issue of gun violence.

Right now, the U.S. Senate has an opportunity to ensure we have a strong partner in addressing this by confirming President Biden's nominee for the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Steve Dettelbach.

We must address gun violence perpetrated by white supremacy. That requires a strong leader at the ATF. Send a message to your Senators to tell them to confirm Steve Dettelbach.

The investigation into the Buffalo shooting has only just begun, and the ATF will play a key role in it.

With decades of experience in combating domestic extremism and white supremists, Steve Dettelbach is well suited to continue to lead these fights at ATF.

Yesterday's mass shooting was not the first time our communities have experienced the devastation caused by an extremist driven by racially motivated hate with a gun. With just a few clicks you can send a message to your Senators and tell them to confirm Steve Dettelbach to lead the ATF—a critical step in tackling armed white supremacy.

Take care,
