With the recent leak of Justice Alito’s draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, the conservative majority’s path to eviscerating well-settled rights and protections is alarmingly clear. If the Court’s final opinion is similar to this document, our nation will face not only a public health crisis, but a crisis of legitimacy for our highest Court. More than ever before, Earthjustice is not only fighting in our courts, but for them too. We are working alongside our allies across the progressive community to galvanize the political will for court reforms and Congressional action that is essential to protect people and our planet. – Abigail Dillen, Earthjustice president

FROM THE FRONTLINES
Our lawsuit to protect Florida’s starving manatees
Under the EPA’s watch, manatees already under threat in Florida are dying at high rates as pollution kills their main food source. The EPA abandoned manatees by allowing Florida regulators to enact inadequate water quality safeguards. The state has repeatedly failed to rein in sources of pollution that cause algae outbreaks, such as wastewater-treatment plants, leaking septic systems, and fertilizer runoff. We are suing because manatees need clean water to live in — it’s that simple. Read more: [link removed]
How North Denver made a first-of-its-kind environmental justice law
North Denver is considered one of the most polluted ZIP codes in the U.S. For decades, polluting entities like a refinery, a power plant, multiple highways, and two Superfund sites were zoned and built in the area. So, when Ean Thomas Tafoya first heard about yet another polluting project coming to his mother’s neighborhood, he and other residents had had enough. They knew it was time for action. A hostile Supreme Court threatens environmental progress
There are a lot of eyes on the Supreme Court, and for good reason — the Court has been exerting its influence on long-settled rights like voting rights and reproductive rights. And now, the Supreme Court is putting into question longstanding environmental rights. Read more: [link removed]

How cryptomining is an environmental disaster
Cryptocurrency mining runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, emitting millions of tons of greenhouse gases that would not have been otherwise emitted. The energy demand from cryptocurrency, specifically cryptocurrency created through the “proof-of-work” method, is threatening the path to decarbonization and zero emissions. Read more: [link removed]

HOW YOU CAN HELP
We do not need more dirty mining to achieve a clean energy future
To avoid the worst effects of the climate crisis, we must quickly ramp down our reliance on fossil fuels and transition to clean energy. But we cannot justly move to a clean energy future at the cost of harming people or the environment. That’s why we need to find sustainable solutions to meet the demands for the critical minerals used to power our renewable infrastructure.
