Like you, I was infuriated to learn that Independent Jewish Voices <[link removed]>, a Canadian organization that presents itself as Jewish, would call for the “dismantlement” of Israel “by any means necessary.” Though this incitement to violence is horrifying, it is, sadly, not surprising.

Read A Word from Our Chair, <[link removed]> Gail Adelson-Marcovitz, asking all Canadians to reject the violence of Nakba Day as well as calls by extremist organizations that threaten Jews and supporters of Israel around the world.

On June 2, Ontarians will head to the polls to choose who will represent us at the provincial level of government for the next four years. Many issues will inform our decision regarding whom we vote for and, at CIJA, we want to be sure you have the resources and information you need to make the best possible decision to represent your interests as a Jewish member of the community.

Learn about the issues of greatest concern to our community at the Ontario Election Hub <[link removed]>, where you can also write to your local candidates to find out how they plan to represent you and address important issues including: Combating Antisemitism <[link removed]>; Supporting Vulnerable Ontarians <[link removed]>; and Growing the Ontario-Israel Partnership <[link removed]>.

Journalists are essential to democracy. The role that they play in reporting the truth is vital, and they deserve all the protection that can be afforded to them. The loss of any journalist, especially one working in conflict zones, is a tragedy.

This week, we joined the international community in mourning the loss <[link removed]> of Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American veteran correspondent and one of the leading journalists of the Arab world. Tragically, she was killed in crossfire between the IDF and Palestinian Islamic Jihad forces. Immediately following the shooting, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and Deputy Prime Minister of Israel and Minister of Defense Benny Gantz affirmed Israel’s commitment to determine who bears responsibility for Ms. Abu Akleh’s death.

Israel has called for a joint investigation <[link removed]> with the Palestinian Authority and for it to produce the bullet for forensic analysis to determine the source of the fatal round. The Palestinian Authority has refused to cooperate <[link removed]> in a joint investigation, saying it will conduct its own investigation and send the results to the International Criminal Court.

The exact circumstances surrounding the journalist’s death remain unclear, and preliminary findings from both the Israeli and Palestinian <[link removed]> investigations show that it is still not possible to determine who fired the fatal bullet.
