Last week, Sen. Joni Ernst, a survivor of domestic abuse and sexual assault, introduced the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019. The Iowa Republican’s legislation embraces a more modern, stronger, and proactive approach to the current threats faced by women and girls. This is an important step forward in stopping violence against women, but we need your help. Demand Congress pass a REAL Violence Against Women Act that better protects women and girls.

New Jersey opened a new front in the war against the gig economy by forcing companies like Uber and Lyft to redefine their independent contractors as employees. This is a strategy by revenue-hungry lawmakers and bitter labor unions to strangle innovation—and one that will hurt gig economy workers who rely on the flexible opportunities that the untraditional industry offers. New Jersey isn’t the first to try to crack down on gig-economy companies. California recently passed legislation set to go into effect on January 1 that reclassifies gig workers as employees of the platforms they use and subject to labor laws such as minimum wage, unemployment insurance and other benefits. States like New York, Oregon and Washington are exploring similar legislation.

- While the vast majority (94%) of full-time workers have access to some form of paid leave, many workers, particularly low-wage and part-time workers, lack sufficient paid time off after having or adopting a child..
- Policymakers can help workers by embracing reforms that help workers help themselves.
- Right now, when millions of people work overtime, they receive extra wages. But not all workers prefer extra pay. Many would prefer additional time off, especially when they are planning to have or adopt a baby, or if they have a family member who needs care.
- Policymakers should update the Fair Labor Standards Act to give workers the option to accrue paid leave benefits for future use rather than extra pay.
- Rep. Andy Biggs proposed expanding health savings accounts (HSAs) to allow workers to increase contributions and use HSA funds to replace lost income during unpaid leave from work.
- Leave reforms would increase financial security for Americans who live paycheck-to-paycheck.
- While expanding HSAs and reforming the Fair Labor Standards Act would not solve the entire problem, these reforms would be a step in the right direction and avoid some of the pitfalls associated with other proposals.

This holiday shopping season is expected to be great for the retail industry, and seasonal workers can expect to cash in. Black Friday deals have already started flooding email inboxes. A strong anticipated spending season demands workers and, in an economy with super-low unemployment, retailers will shell out more or get creative to attract seasonal workers.

Free tampons are coming to all the student bathrooms at Brown University—and that includes the men’s and “gender inclusive” bathrooms. According to Newsweek: "By putting menstrual products in women's, men's, and gender-inclusive bathrooms, [Brown's student body president Viet] Nguyen's campaign highlights an often ignored fact: Not all people who menstruate are women."

In an interview, Pacific Legal Foundation's senior lawyer Anastasia Boden argued that because of the “woman quota,” “people will ask whether a woman is being hired based on her merit or to fill a quota.” Penalties imposed for not meeting the requirement are stiff.
