With just 3 days to go until Election Day, I’ve found it important to look back and remember why I decided to run in the first place.

I’m running because the GOP is willing to ignore hatred in order to maintain power. People deserve better.

People like my mother and father, who immigrated here. They worked tirelessly and prioritized my sisters’ and my public education. Even in the face of racism and hate, they stayed firm in their values to serve and cherish those around us.

I could not have become the first Muslim woman ever elected to office in NC without their sacrifices. I refuse to let the GOP destroy the America that made my family’s story possible.

People like my three friends Deah, Yusor, and Razan. In 2015 they were murdered in a hate crime for being Muslim, a faith that I share.

It was their parents’ strength and love that pushed me to look for ways to defeat the hate that took my friends, to make sure no other family or community would have to live through the pain we endured.

I began organizing. Elevating marginalized voices and connecting communities with progressive policy, and ultimately serving as a political director for the Bernie Sanders campaign. I came to realize that running for office myself is how I can best fight for justice and continue their legacy.

People in my community who are struggling just to make ends meet. Congress has the power to improve our lives. We can’t wait any longer for a living wage, Medicare for All and a Green New Deal.
