John -- The news about Roe v. Wade made me upset, angry, and heartbroken – but I was not surprised. At every level of government, today’s Republican party has purposefully attacked a woman’s right to choose. In my 2018 election, my opponent voted for a bill in Congress that would have jailed doctors who performed abortions. Things have gotten even more extreme since. But there is hope: In 2020, I was able to win re-election to one of the most competitive seats in Congress by going on offense on pro-choice policies. The Washington Post covered a study that concluded I was the only Democrat to go on offense against anti-abortion policies and win. How did I do it? I highlighted the extremist, anti-abortion views of the GOP in my paid advertising, on the debate stage, and with every chance I got – and on election day I had one of the top margins of victory for a Democrat in a competitive district. Here in Georgia, Republicans who control our state government are already talking about calling a special state legislative session to pass an outright abortion ban if the Supreme Court decision holds.
