John, think back to the Trump years and the destruction he caused to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
In just four years, Trump’s administration:
Shrank the agency’s funding;
Offered buyouts to cut back on agency staffing;
Deleted the agency’s climate website;
Undermined climate science;
Halted environmental justice training; and
Weakened pollution rules for cars, power plants, and oil and gas producers.
Since then, the Biden administration has worked to repair the EPA, but it’s more than just flipping a switch to undo the damage. The agency is still plagued by a lack of resources and staff to get the agency back on track and make up for the lost time.
In short, with budget expansions denied, key positions still left unconfirmed by the Senate due to Republican intransigence, and an impending Supreme Court case that could dramatically scale back the agency’s authority, the EPA is still in crisis mode.
Even with the cards stacked against them, the EPA is pushing forward to reach our climate goals. They’ve introduced rules to cut critical greenhouse gases such as hydrofluorocarbons and methane and are finalizing new rules around power plant emissions, to name just a few. As climate change threats loom larger and larger, the agency’s role is only becoming all the more critical.
Even though Trump is out of the White House, we’re still dealing with the damage his administration has caused. It turns out that it’s much easier to destroy than to rebuild.
We need more pro-environment voices in Congress that can join with SEEC and finally give EPA the resources it needs. And now that the midterms are almost here, we can’t afford to lose a single SEEC member’s seat. Help SEEC members repair Trump’s damage and continue passing strong environmental policies by chipping in today. [[link removed]]
