Friend,
With the Supreme Court expected to overturn Roe v. Wade late next month, about half of U.S. states will likely outlaw abortion.
This would harm millions of people and violate our most basic freedom and right to control our own bodies.
But state officials can take action now to protect and expand abortion access in their states, or to repeal or block any abortion restrictions in their states.
Sign now to U.S. governors: Use every lever of power possible to ensure that pregnant people can access safe abortion care in your state.
Michigan and 7 other states have pre-Roe anti-abortion laws that never got repealed, which would go back into effect if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
Michigan’s 1931 law would make performing an abortion a felony punishable by up to four years in prison, and it would make advertising or selling abortion-inducing drugs a misdemeanor. It doesn’t even include exceptions for rape or incest.
The Republican-majority state legislature supports this outrageous 1931 law, even though the vast majority of Michiganders want to repeal it.
So a coalition is preparing a state ballot initiative for this fall’s election, and our governor Gretchen Whitmer is pursuing other options. For example, she filed a lawsuit asking the state Supreme Court to recognize a state constitutional right to an abortion and to stop enforcement of the 1931 Michigan abortion ban.
Governor Whitmer is also calling on other governors to take action to ensure that people can have safe abortions regardless of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision, saying: “If we do not use every lever of power we have right now, or if we succumb to complacency, Americans will suffer and may die.”
Please sign now to demand that U.S. governors use every lever of power possible to ensure that pregnant people can access safe abortion care in their states.
In solidarity,
Rashida
