As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a monthly prayer alert. I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. -- Gary

The leak of Justice Samuel Alito's draft opinion from the Supreme Court has brought out both the best and the worst in America. An independent observer who values truth can see it clearly. Others are blinded by preconceptions and half-truths.

On the positive side, an independent judiciary has had the will, strength of character and more recent medical facts to tackle the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that invented a nationwide "right" to abortion. Fifty years and over 63 million abortions later, the current Supreme Court has heard a new case in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization and looks to be close to overturning Roe v. Wade.

If the high court does overturn Roe, decisions about abortion would be returned to the individual states, where state legislatures elected by the citizens of each state, and not nine Supreme Court justices, would define the legality of abortion in their state. In a federal system of government like ours, this is exactly as it should be -- albeit 50 years and tens of millions of lives too late.

And no matter what you might hear in the "mainstream media" or from liberal friends on social media, the Supreme Court is not addressing same-sex marriage or interracial marriage or any other issue. The Alito draft opinion makes this clear.

Yet, the reaction to this unprecedented leak has been disturbing and frightening to watch. News coverage has been wildly inaccurate and hyperbolic. The rhetoric has been inflammatory, and doomsday predictions about the breadth of the decision have fed into the unsettled psyche of those who are choosing to be manipulated and used by not reading more and understanding for themselves.

Angry mobs have broken into church services, defaced cars with pro-life stickers, firebombed pro-life organizations, vandalized crisis pregnancy centers and marched defiantly in front of the homes of conservative Supreme Court Justices. They scream or chant loudly, carry offensive signs and some even proudly talk of the babies they have had killed in their wombs as a sign of what they see as superior womanhood. Frankly, some of these demonstrators seem almost possessed.

In the midst of all this, the Biden Administration has encouraged the angry protesters and has done little to dissuade them from demonstrating at churches or justices' homes. While tempers flare and words become increasingly inflammatory, Biden officials seem to be giving a tacit seal of approval to the angry mob.

One only need look back to the summer of 2020 to see how such raw emotion can quickly turn to violence, death and destruction. There’s a fine line between emotion-laden protests and violence and loss of life.

Please ask our Heavenly Father to protect the lives of the justices and their families, and to keep their homes and neighborhoods safe from these angry crowds. Give Your peace that passeth all understanding to the spouses and families of the justices who could not have imagined themselves in this situation simply because their loved one is performing their constitutional duties.

Dear Lord, we ask that You work Your will in the hearts of angry protestors so they would pause and educate themselves with the facts, and then make their views known in a more civil fashion.

God, we ask you to prompt those in the executive and legislative branches of government to provide protection for the judiciary, and to be more measured in their choice of words.

Lord, prompt members of the news media to be more precise and accurate in their descriptions of the potential legal ramifications and changes that may occur. In many cases they are setting the parameters for the public debate, but doing so in ways that inflame rather than illuminate.

May those in the pro-life community present their views with grace, love, accuracy and a dedication to continue to help women facing an unplanned pregnancy just as Jesus would do.

Finally, Heavenly Father, prompt all of us to recognize what a truly momentous time this in our nation's history. May it be a turning point away from selfish desires and callous attitudes toward a renewed respect for the sanctity of life and the value, dignity and worth of each and every life.

May we humble ourselves. May we seek Your face. May we turn from our wicked ways. And, Lord, please heal our land.
