John – If you’re like most people, then when you think of the midterms, your mind often goes to federal races and the fight for control over the House and Senate. And while those elections are definitely important, we can’t fall into the trap of ignoring down-ballot elections like state supreme court races, which are just as vital to the future of our democracy.

Especially when Republicans are so focused on gaining control of those courts to remove a critical check on their quest for unmitigated power:

In 2010, Republicans strategically targeted state legislatures because they understood the impact that their wins would have on the future of redistricting. As a result of their gains that year, Republicans gerrymandered the maps so severely it put Democrats at a disadvantage even when more voters preferred their policies.

Now, 12 years later and with voters fully aware of the GOP’s intentions in redistricting, Republicans are targeting state supreme court elections because they believe those judges could decide whether states will be allowed to gerrymander – if they will be stopped.

We have to be prepared to fight back and stop Republicans from stacking state courts with judges who they believe will give a green light to gerrymandered maps – and we need your help to do it.
