TakeAction Minnesota Weekly Wrap

Dear John,

I hope your weekend is off to a good start—mine began with a dental implant. Let’s get straight to the digest.

Here’s what we’re reading, watching, and listening to this week:

1. Roe

This Washington Post piece follows antiabortion law advancing in Louisiana that classifies abortion, in-vitro fertilization, IUDs, and emergency contraception to be homicide. It’s gut-wrenching but important for us to understand the full implications of Roe being overturned.

2. Abortion Stories

People should not have to share their most personal and painful stories to protect our basic human rights. Nevertheless, five members of Congress courageously shared their abortion stories, some publicly for the first time since the SCOTUS leak.

3. GOP Convention

This weekend, the state GOP will endorse its nominees for secretary of state, attorney general, and governor. Catch up with this GOP state convention preview story.

4. Text Books

From the New York Times, a peek into the text books Florida rejected.

5. Student Debt

The data is clear. Canceling student debt is an economic justice issue.

6. Motherhood: Essential Labor

Care work should be public and universal. Read the New Yorker piece Can Motherhood be a Mode of Rebellion?

7. Elite Capture

My colleague Katie (a major contributor of the news digest!) highly recommends the book Elite Capture: How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics (& Everything Else). Listen to a discussion about Elite Capture and read the book review.

8. Black Hole

ICYMI: Astronomers captured the first picture of the Milky Way’s huge, chaotic, trillions-of-degrees-hot black hole.

9. Friday the 13th

It’s time to reclaim this day. Just for fun, check out How the Patriarchy Stole Friday the 13th from Women and Made It Evil.

10. Lunar Eclipse

This is rare and big: Make your plans to watch the total lunar eclipse on Sunday night!

That’s a wrap. Have a great weekend. Send me what you're reading.
