Data Show E-Cigarette Use Rises; Meet the OYLPN Youth Council Who Are Doing Something About It Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a web page. Happy Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and this year we want to say thank you to you. We believe that everyone has a role to play in prevention. Whether you're a parent who talks to your kids about substance use, a prevention professional dedicating your career to prevention, or an advocate for prevention, you are playing your role. We are thankful for the people that partner with us every day to prevent substance misuse and promote mental health wellness. Happy Thanksgiving! National Youth Tobacco Survey Shows Continued Rise in Youth E-Cigarette Use The 2019 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) registered an increase in current adolescent e-cigarette use over the past year, rising from 20.8% in 2018 to 27.5% in 2019 among high school students. Middle school use rates rose as well, more than doubling from 4.9% in 2018 to 10.5% this past spring. In addition to current use rates as described above, the NYTS found the following: Of students who currently use e-cigarettes, 34% of high schoolers and 18% of middle schoolers reported frequent use of e-cigarettes (defined as use on 20 of the preceding 30 days). JUUL remains the most popular e-cigarette brand among youth, with a majority of middle and high school students naming it as their “usual” e-cigarette brand. Fruit, mint, candy, and dessert flavors were the most popular e-juice flavors. These results disprove marketing claims in the e-cigarette industry by confirming once again the appeal of JUUL and sweet flavors to young people. This is despite several too-late attempts by JUUL to convince the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) they’re taking the youth vaping epidemic seriously, including their “Make the Switch” campaign to attract smokers of combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes and their decision to stop selling flavored e-juices in brick and mortar stores. It may be that more time is needed for survey results to reflect these changes, but continued pressure on the e-cigarette industry is doubtless needed to counter the enduring popularity of these products. The NYTS is jointly conducted by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention each year to track tobacco trends. For more information on how this survey was administered as well as the results, check out open-access article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. OYLPN was created by youth for youth to create a community of like-minded teens who want to be part of a solution. More than 150 organizations have joined OYLPN since its creation in 2011. To ensure that youth lead the efforts of OYLPN, an OYLPN Youth Council was created to engage youth voices in behavioral health. The OYLPN Youth Council consists of up to 25 high school students from every region of our state. Every year, the OYLPN Youth Council: Organizes and leads the We Are The Majority Rally to raise awareness about the fact that most youth do not use drugs. Meets with legislators to advocate for youth-led prevention and the promotion of mental health wellness. Empowers teens across the state to take a stand for their communities. Promotes protective factors in their peers lives to help prevent drug use. The OYLPN Youth Council allows youth to make a real difference in the lives of teens across Ohio, develop their leadership, public speaking, and advocacy skills and build relationships with other teens dedicated to making our world a better place.
