Today, First Liberty Institute filed a request for a preliminary injunction in federal court on behalf of our client, Shields of Strength.
Our petition seeks to stop the Department of Defense (DoD) from enforcing its discriminatory policy while the case is being heard. That policy is preventing Shields of Strength from producing and distributing its military themed replica dog tags and jewelry with encouraging Bible verses.
We argue that there’s no legal reason for the DoD to discriminate against Shields of Strength while the case is ongoing. Our petition states:
“Because of the DoD’s ever escalating religious hostility, SoS is no longer able to provide replica dog tags even upon request of service members or the military units in which they serve. A preliminary injunction is necessary to correct the DoD’s unconstitutional discrimination against religious viewpoints, to stop impeding religious exercise, and to maintain the status quo while this case is pending.”
For over 20 years, this Christian company has graciously provided dog tags with inspirational Scriptures to active-duty service members, veterans and their families who want them.
These Scripture-inscribed dog tags are a source of reassurance, a symbol of sacrifice and a tangible reminder of the strength gained through their faith.
It’s a cruel insult to deny our service members a source of hope and encouragement simply because it contains a religious message.
Banning Shields of Strength’s dog tags isn’t just harsh and unkind—it’s outright unlawful. The fact is, it’s constitutional for Americans who love their country to encourage military members with inspirational religious messages.
Please join First Liberty as we fight for the rights of our veterans and service members.
They need YOUR support to help put a stop to the barrage of violations against their religious liberty—including their constitutional right to wear religious jewelry and find strength in their faith.
