Dear neighbor:

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Mental health plays a crucial role in our overall wellbeing. This month, I encourage you take steps to care for your mental health by spending time outdoors, connecting with loved ones, getting at least seven hours of sleep each night, and visiting nami.org/help for more free resources. If you or a loved one need help, you can also call the LA County Help Line at (800) 854-7771 or text “LA” to 741741. Remember, you are not alone.

This week was another busy one in Washington. As Vladimir Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine continues, the House passed a $40 billion funding bill to provide urgently needed military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. By passing this aid, we are sending a powerful message to Putin that we stand united with the people of Ukraine and will continue to support them until they win this war.

While I’m pleased the House was able to come together this week on support for Ukraine, I’m disappointed that Senate Republicans voted against codifying Roe v. Wade in the wake of last week’s leaked Supreme Court draft opinion. Ahead of the Senate vote, I joined over 100 colleagues in urging the Senate to end the filibuster and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to codify Roe. Read our letter here.

Here are some other items I’ve been working on this week:

  • Introduced a bipartisan resolution with Rep. Joe Wilson calling for the Secretary of State to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, which would allow the U.S. to impose further costs on Russia.
  • Hosted a Youth Town Hall with our CA-33 Youth Advisory Council to discuss issues that matter to young people in our community. Applications for our 2022-2023 cohort are now open until July 1st, 2022.
  • Voted in favor of a bill to expand federal firefighters’ access to compensation and benefits when they are hurt on the job.
