Republicans are fighting to take us backwards and dismantle rights we’ve had for decades

Indivisibles,

The GOP Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, leaving millions of people without access to abortion care.

We’ll keep this short: We have to fight back. That’s why we’re working with Planned Parenthood on a massive mobilization TOMORROW -- and we need you to join us. Click here to find a Bans Off Our Bodies event tomorrow, May 14, and sign up to attend.

Here are some important safety tips to review and share as you prepare for Saturday's mobilizations:

  • Follow the lead of local abortion orgs, funds, and clinics first: Seek out, honor, and uplift local leadership, and those doing the organizing for reproductive justice, safety, health, and access in your local area and graciously receive and incorporate feedback from above-mentioned communities.
  • COVID-19 safety and precautions: We encourage participants in #BansOffOurBodies events to wear masks and encourage social distancing.
  • Non-engagement with anti-abortion extremists, opposition members, or other hostile individuals: Avoid engaging in conversation or any verbal exchange with aggressive, hostile individuals. Participants should be encouraged, if in an uncomfortable situation, to create distance and notify security or a protest organizer. Only follow organizing guidance from official protest organizers and be wary of directions that are not coming from the organizers.
  • Personal safety: Be careful about what you share about yourself/your party and with whom. This includes social media (see Digital surveillance and privacy below). Avoid wearing clothing or other items hostile individuals could use to identify you, and cover visible tattoos. Review your transportation plan to and from the event, and let someone know where you’ll be, when you expect to be home and when they should expect to hear from you after you’re back from the in-person events.
  • Digital surveillance and privacy: Review your privacy settings on social media apps (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Adjust them to keep your personal info more secure. Review any social media apps on your phone to confirm that your location is turned off, and that your profile is set to private. Turn off location services on your Maps / Navigation systems. If you have your phone with you, do not connect to unsecured wifi. If you can and feel comfortable doing so, when going to in-person events, leave your phone at home so law enforcement can’t track you. If you choose not to bring your phone with you, keep a list of numbers with you in case of emergency, including at least one person who is not at the event with you. Another one of those numbers could be your local public defender’s office, legal aid organization, or state bar referral resource.
  • Legal resources: If you need to speak to an attorney for any reason, you may call your local state bar association for an attorney referral. If you'd like to speak to an attorney about a crime that occurred during the protest, you may contact the National Crime Victims Bar Association to access resources and connect with legal assistance in your area.
  • Law enforcement: For more information about your rights, consult the National Lawyers Guild guide on police encounters (PDF).

Republicans are fighting to take us backwards and dismantle rights we’ve had for decades -- and they know what they’re doing is massively unpopular. This is our chance to showcase how strong the American people’s support for abortion is. We’re glad you’re a part of the fight.
