Why do candidates keep talking about a fundraising deadline?
Hello and Happy Friday, friends!
I’m going to guess you’re getting a bunch of emails from candidates about an upcoming fundraising/reporting deadline.
But you all know I do things a bit differently – I hope you’ve noticed our emails sound a bit different than most candidates’ emails. Do you know why?
Because I work on all of them myself. Me, Kimberly. I know some folks believe I shouldn't spend time on that, let staff do it all, etc. But to me, as a voter, I want to hear from the candidate herself – because she’s the one I’m supporting with my money and sometimes my volunteer time. So I want to hear her voice.
So today, I want to explain the reporting process and why these fundraising reports matter. Most voters, understandably, don’t know. Heck, I didn’t know until I ran for office!
What is this whole reporting deadline thing? On May 19th, state and local candidates in Iowa have to report all money raised, including in-kind contributions, and all money spent between January 1st of 2022 and May 14th of 2022.
Why do these reports matter? You can’t run a successful campaign without adequate funding. Donations pay for literature, advertising, staff to knock doors, and various events and items we need to earn votes and win the election.
These reports are discussed in the news/media and are used by some folks to measure the strength of a campaign.
How can you help? We need your financial support, whatever you are able to give.
