Meet Makenze Blackburn, Content Creator for NNCP

In the summer of 2021, Makenze moved to Concord, North Carolina to live close to relatives in Concord and Chapel Hill. Prior to joining NNCP, Makenze served her Toledo, Ohio community as a school ambassador and as a member of the National Honor Society. As a passionate climate-activist, Makenze organized and led her school’s first climate rally and helped establish her school’s environment club to educate students on environmental issues and environmental advocacy. Makenze will pursue a Bachelor of Arts in environmental studies to advocate for people of color in environmental legislation.

You can see Makenze's work on our social media and she is the face of our TikTok for the summer!

Elected Officials Salaries

The Wake County Board of Commissioners recently announced that they are considering giving themselves a 132% pay increase and making their jobs officially full-time. Many local positions, and even positions in the NC General Assembly, are paid and considered as part-time. And this is why majority of our elected officials across the state are older, whiter and richer, making it nearly impossible for working class people to run for office and then be able to serve in office, have other jobs to make ends meet and provide for their families.

Last year, the NC General Assembly's long session lasted 14 months- it is only supposed to last 10 months. This meant lots of back and forth for representative and senators resulting in many of them resigning before the term ended or not seeking re-election in 2022.

Wake County Commissioners make about $28,000, Mecklenburg and Guilford County Commissioners make about $31,000. Wake County Commissioners want to increase their wages to $66,223, which would include a retirement benefit that is 5% of the final salary, $1,800 for technology and $4,800 for travel expenses.

Increasing wages for elected positions and making them officially full-time would help a more diverse electorate be able to run for office and then give them the means to properly serve their constituents all year long.

Primary Election Voting Turnout Increased This Year

As of Monday, May 9, almost a week before the May 2022 Primary in NC, turnout has already increased from past mid-term election years. Around 247,000 ballots have been cast before Monday, May 9, including 10,000 mail-in ballots. Our goal for our organization is to get more people to vote, and be engaged in the political process after elections are over. We are so happy to see more people turning out for what is usually a low-turnout election.

The Final Days Before the May Primary

The May Primary will be here THIS TUESDAY! Getting engaged in #EveryElectionEveryTime is important for us to have a democracy on every level. Make sure you and everyone you know has a voting plan! The following deadlines are important for the 3 ways you can vote- in-person early voting, in-person voting on Election Day or vote by mail!

In-Person Early Voting ends tomorrow on May 14. You can also same day register or update your voter registration during early voting.
If you still have a mail-in ballot, you need to send it NOW so that it will be postmarked by May 17! Make your vote count!
The Primary is on May 17 and polling places will be open from 6:30am to 7:30pm.

Who can vote in the NC Primaries?

NC citizens who will be 18 years old by the November 2022 General Election can vote in this election- must be pre-registered to vote. Learn more about that HERE.
Unaffiliated/independent voters can still vote in the primary- you will need to choose a ballot when voting- either Democrat or Republican.

A photo ID is still not required to vote in NC.

Not Sure Who Is On Your Ballot?

One of our wonderful volunteers and now one of our organizers, Claire Stone, has completed a record of all candidates running on all ballots in all 100 COUNTIES IN NC! We hope this helps you find who is on your ballot so you can find out who aligns with your values and vision for NC.

You can view the table of deadlines, board of elections offices and all candidates, which you can filter through at the button below! Scroll down the bottom of the website page to see the table!

Check Your Voter Registration
We’re no stranger to voter suppression in our state. So we encourage you to check your voter registration often as board of elections offices purge voters from time to time.
