The families of Masafer Yatta have owned and cultivated this land for 13 generations — long before Israel and Zionism even existed.

The pretense for this colonial theft and destruction? That the Palestinians of Masafer Yatta are “illegally” living in a military “firing zone.”

But Israel baselessly declared this “firing zone” in the 1980s, after the people of Masafer Yatta had lived there for centuries, with the explicit purpose of expelling them to colonize their land. Former prime minister Ariel Sharon brazenly discussed this colonial ethnic-cleansing strategy in a 1981 meeting. And Masafer Yatta is not the only Palestinian area where Israel has claimed Palestinian land for supposed military use: today 18% of the West Bank is considered a “firing zone.”

Yesterday’s Israeli high court ruling defies international law, which prohibits both the expropriation of land for reasons that do not benefit the people living on it as well as the forced transfer of those people. But the judge in the case was himself a settler illegally living in the occupied West Bank. And Israel’s courts are not just biased; they are tools of its colonial, apartheid system that disenfranchises Palestinians to exercise increasing control over them and their land.

Not only do the courts not abide by international law, but no foreign government holds them accountable, either. In fact, the US government gives Israel $3.8 billion per year to fund the bulldozers and other machinery that will be used to demolish homes in Masafer Yatta — as well as the soldiers that will train on top of the ethnically-cleansed village.

Ukraine and the US are the only 2 countries to vote against a UN measure to combat the glorification of Nazis, and all of Europe abstained. It's almost like the US is supporting Ukrainian Nazis and all of Europe knows it....
Here's how it works: The government buys weapons with YOUR money, sends them into a proxy war, the Ukrainians mainly suffer the loss of lives, YOU lose millions (soon billions) of dollars, and the profits go to the investors in weapons, media, steel and whatever resources they want to rip off.

Remember the Afghanistan Papers? This bit of investigative journalism revealed that the Bush and Obama administrations had been lying through their teeth about our progress in order to prolong the war. They did this to enrich war profiteers. Trillions of dollars disappeared in Afghanistan. Now we see this same scenario playing out in Ukraine as the media keeps telling us that Russia is losing and demoralized, but we still need to send billions of dollars in weaponry.

And millions of Americans are eating this up and endorsing the looting of the Treasury, some even endorsing a hot war with Russia. If only we could make every one of them revisit all of the lies the government and media have shamelessly disseminated to the public in order to promote war. All we can do is keep speaking the truth. When I ran for city council in 2020, I promised an American Canyon woman named Sophie that I would try to get a park for disabled children built, so that kids like her daughter Sophia, won't have to sit on the side of the park and watch other children play. I haven't forgotten that promise to Sophie, and still plan on following through with it. As a Congressperson I would be in a unique position to discuss the details with all the right people. We can get this done, not just for Sophia, but for all the disabled children in the area, who I'm certain, would come from even neighboring cities to play on such a specialized and unique park.
