Laura Kelly Deserves Zero Credit for KPERS Bill

(TOPEKA, Kan.) – For the second day in a row, Laura Kelly is flip-flopping to take credit for a popular Republican-led initiative after years of previously opposing it.
"Laura Kelly is attempting to claim full credit for a measure that was proposed by Derek Schmidt and brought across the finish line by Republicans in the Kansas Legislature to reduce our KPERS debt," said Shannon Pahls, KSGOP Executive Director. "In fact, on multiple occasions, she has proposed to add billions of dollars in debt for taxpayers and vetoed a previous bill to make an additional KPERS payment in 2019. Laura Kelly's election-year conversion continues, but Kansans won't be fooled."
Just a little over a year ago, the KPERS Board of Trustees had to forcefully rebuke Kelly's proposal to "reamortize" the debt in the system. Thankfully, the Legislature rejected Kelly's attempts to do so three times.

This comes a day after Kelly signed into law a food tax phase-out, after vetoing a similar Republican-led bill in 2019 that would have already reduced the tax from 6.5% to 2.9% by now, and fully eliminated it by January.
