Listen to what Brad and education leaders had to say about how the DOE is using federal recovery funds for our schools

John,

As budget watchdog for the City of New York, Brad is focused on ensuring that public dollars are used effectively and accountably to achieve our shared priorities.

That’s why he has drilled down on how the Department of Education is spending the more than $7 billion in federal relief funds for academic and social/emotional recovery. Because ensuring our students get the support they need to heal and thrive is essential for a just recovery for all our communities.

Listen to the virtual townhall conversation Brad hosted on Monday with education leaders to talk about the way forward for successful and supportive schools.

Last month Brad released a report that found nine months into this fiscal year that less than half of the funds allocated for this year have been spent. At a City Council hearing this week, the Chancellor was asked about Brad’s report and how the DOE plans to make the best use of those funds.

The past two years have been hard for NYC students and teachers. The loss of in person learning, the disruption and loss within school communities and families, the constantly shifting schedules and precautions, have all taken a toll. But we have an incredible opportunity now to invest in our students, an opportunity we cannot waste.

On Monday evening, Brad hosted a conversation with Congressman Jamaal Bowman, State Senator Robert Jackson, Shael Polakow-Suransky from Bank Street, and Smitha Varghese from the Alliance for Quality Education about priorities for a supportive recovery for our students.

Listen to Monday’s conversation and let us know what you think in the comments. What does your school need for a strong, supportive recovery?
