Dear John,

Nothing is certain in politics, but political polls show that Republicans are likely to regain the majority in both chambers of Congress after the November election. We can't wait until events like this happen to take action.

The well-funded, immigration-expansionist lobbies within the Republican Party certainly aren't waiting. They already are pressuring party leaders for an approach next year that would leave our borders unsecured.

We have to act now to gain pledges from Republican leaders that they instead would pursue an agenda of actions that would truly stop the chaos at the border. (Those actions are listed below.)

As you remember, Republicans have often campaigned on cracking down on the border, but they've usually lost their focus and blown the chance to pass effective laws when they've actually held power.

Opposing us is a new coalition calling itself the Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus. It is proposing half-hearted enforcement measures that appear to be mere window dressing that wouldn't change the disorder on the border. Member groups include the George W. Bush Institute, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, the Koch-brothers groups Americans for Prosperity and the LIBRE Initiative, and religious groups like the National Association of Evangelicals and the Evangelical Immigration Table. What they most want is not an end to illegal immigration but another huge amnesty and more cheap foreign labor, and they have plenty of money, tons of lobbyists, and allies in the mainstream media and government.

On OUR side, NumbersUSA is partnering with organizations including the Heritage Foundation, Judicial Watch, National Border Patrol Council, the Federation for American Immigration Reform, and several former officials of the Department of Homeland Security (such as Ken Cuccinelli and Chad Wolf) and our long-time House champion, retired Rep. Lamar Smith. Our coalition this week issued a letter directly to Republican leaders that says that if the GOP gains the majority in November's election,

"...it will be in large part because Americans have rejected the Biden Administration's purposeful dismantling of our nation's borders and our immigration enforcement infrastructure. Congress should be emboldened with the mandate to immediately legislate unflinchingly, ensuring that neither this nor any future administration is again able to weaponize loopholes in the immigration systemand defiantly refuse to follow plain lawto purposefully drive mass illegal immigration to the United States."

We don't have the massive amounts of money or many allies in the media, like our opposition does. But our job is made a bit easier because we actually have voters on our side. (For instance, the latest Fox News poll shows 63% of Americans want to keep Title 42 in place, while only 27 support the administration's position.)

So we don't have large PACs and massive campaign donations and dozens of public relations specialists. What we do have is a ton of citizen activists like you,

John, NumbersUSA will put everything we've got into insisting that Republicans come through this time with very specific reforms. Some of the proposals the letter lays out demand the following of Republicans:

• Do NOT trade any amnesty for cracking down on the border. America must regain control of our borders, and we will NOT trade an amnesty to do so.
• Close the maddening loophole in law that allows unaccompanied alien children from countries other than Mexico to cross illegally into this country and never be removed.
• Terminate the Flores settlement agreement that limits detention of family units to 20-days.
• Restrict "prosecutorial discretion," which officials have manipulated as a catch-all excuse for limiting immigration enforcement.
• Require full implementation of the "Remain in Mexico" policy to keep would-be asylum seekers out of this country until their cases are decided.
• Fund more customs and border patrol personnel, more technology, and more beds so that border crossers who are arrested can be kept in custody until deported.

If voters trust Republicans to lead the next Congress, we insist that they fulfill that trust by promptly enacting next year the above noted reforms and the many more listed in our public letter.

That's because many Republican-oriented business and religious groups are already pushing for the projected new Republican Congress to pass amnesties and sharply higher legal immigration levels and more guest workers.

While the letter to GOP Congressional leaders won't bear fruit until next year, there is immigration action in Congress right now. Sen. Mitch McConnell has said that the price of the GOP supporting another $10 billion in COVID funding is allowing a vote on an amendment to force Pres. Biden to continue the Title 42 program that has allowed more than 1.7 million illegal border crossers to be quickly returned across the border without allowing them to claim asylum. Of course, Title 42 is based on us needing to keep more COVID infections from entering the U.S. during the pandemic, so it is a temporary measure. But it is better than nothing.

Word has it that Democratic Senate Leaders are getting close to throwing in the towel and allowing that vote to happen. Ten Democratic Senators, feeling pressure from voters and hoping to preserve their jobs in the election, have called for Title 42 to continue, even though the Biden administration wants it eliminated. (Many thanks to all of you who live in the states of those 10 Senators and have been pounding them with email messages and phone calls the last year even though until now it may have looked as if they weren't noticing.)
