Dear John,

When we launched our pangolin campaign in 2018, the world’s most trafficked wild mammal was already in peril.

They’re now in even greater danger, as the Chinese Government is promoting the expansion of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) across Africa.

We’re not against plant-based TCM, and only a small portion of TCM formulas use animal ingredients. But unless strong measures are put in place, this expansion is likely to further incentivise the killing of vulnerable species such as pangolins, rhinos and elephants.

Uncovering a brutal trade

As our investigations have shown, people are looking to make a profit in the traditional Chinese medicine industry by trading in pangolins.

‘Ms M’, an ‘entrepreneur’ who moved to Uganda to trade in pangolins and other wildlife, told EIA undercover investigators that she had built up a stockpile of pangolin scales, and planned to set up TCM factories to process them in Africa for export to China, and for local sale.
