As DC works to improve pedestrian safety, new research from Urban Institute experts expands the definition of walkability to emphasize equity and inform investment efforts that can better achieve Vision Zero goals.

Redefining Walkability measures walkability across Washington DC, using a series of maps that display neighborhoods’ access to resources, environmental quality, police stops, infrastructure quality, and safety. Although no single measure of walkability can fully encompass the challenges pedestrians face, these maps can begin to show
